What is fill power – and why is it important?
The fill power indicates how much the down can expand again after being compressed. The higher this value, the better the warmth-to-weight ratio. A down jacket with a fill power of,for example, 700 cuin (cubic inches) or more provides particularly good insulation while remaining pleasantly light.Foreveryday use, a value of 600 cuin or more is often sufficient, butforextreme conditions such as high-altitude tours or deep winter, we recommend 800 cuin or more.
How do I wash my down jacket properly?
Ideally at 30°C on a gentle cycle with a special down detergent. Then dry thoroughly – ideally in a dryer with tennis balls to help the down fluff up again.
Can a down jacket get wet?
Yes, moisture reduces its insulating capacity. However, many models have a water-repellent or waterproof shell. For wet conditions, we also recommend a hardshell jacket.
How can I recognize good down quality?
Pay attention to the fill power (cuin), the mix ratio (e.g., 90/10 down/feathers), and certifications such as RDS (Responsible Down Standard).
