Functional cycling underwear for men

Functional and, above all, breathable underwear offers many advantages during training and athletic competition. Cycling shorts for men are particularly important in cycling. The ideal model can vary depending on the intended use.

When do my cycling base layers need a seat pad?

The answer to this question depends on various factors: for example, if your cycling pants do not have an integrated seat pad, then you should wear functional cycling underwear with a seat pad. When mountain biking, padded inner shorts worn under loose-fitting mountain bike pants are a good idea. These bike shorts with integrated seat pads are supplied with casual bike pants. They can be worn not only under mountain bike pants, but also on their own as tights. Freeride, downhill, and all-mountain bikers are convinced by this layered look.

For road bikes, however, the close-fitting look is more suitable. Under slim-fit tights with integrated seat padding, thin bike underwear without padding is worn at most for hygiene reasons. Often, however, underwear is not worn at all to avoid unnecessary friction points from seams.

What do cyclists wear directly on their skin?

A cycling undershirt is also a must-have in any cycling wardrobe. For summer, a tank top or short-sleeved undershirt will do. In winter, however, a warm long-sleeved undershirt is a good choice. Not only undershirts, but also functional cycling underwear for men in general should always have the following functionality:

  • Functional cycling underwear should be breathable.
  • It should also offer good moisture transport. Moisture is then quickly wicked away from the body and can dry on the outside of the functional underwear.
  • Cycling underwear should be close-fitting, i.e., close to the body. It can also be described as a second skin. Only then can the material perform to its full potential.

It's all about the material

Synthetic fibers such as polyester are generally used in the manufacture of functional cycling underwear for men. This material is breathable, quick-drying, durable, and easy to care for. This makes it ideal for activities involving intense physical exertion. Natural merino fiber is also becoming increasingly important in the field of functional cycling underwear.

Merino wool naturally has all the properties that synthetic fibers have. In addition, merino wool is odor-resistant, warms you when it's cold and cools you when it's hot, is soft and also easy to care for. Functional underwear made of merino wool or with merino wool content is therefore particularly suitable for multi-day tours where a washing machine is not always available. Merino wool is also very light, so it hardly adds any weight to your backpack.
