Functional underwear, also known as sports underwear, is the bottom layer of your layering system. It lies directly on the skin and is the first layer to absorb body moisture. This is where it can show what it's made of:
We offer short tops, long tops, short bottoms, long bottoms, sports bras, and cycling underwear. Functional underwear for women differs from normal underwear in its functionality. More specifically, it has three functions:
Functional underwear is considered breathable if it absorbs body moisture and transports it to the outside. Otherwise, you would quickly feel soaked during sweaty activities. The damp underwear would stick to your body and cool you down. Did you know that an untrained person produces about 0.8 liters of sweat in an hour of exercise, but a trained person produces 3 liters? Sweating is healthy. That's why your clothing, except for your base layer, should be designed with this in mind.
Your body wants to maintain a constant temperature of 37 degrees, no matter what you are doing. When you exert yourself during outdoor activities, you sweat so that the evaporative cooling cools your skin. Good women's functional underwear helps your body stay in the comfortable 37-degree zone.
Winter sports pose completely different challenges for functional underwear. Here, insulation against the cold is particularly important. Ski underwear or thermal underwear is not only warm, but also breathable – so you stay dry. Because nothing leads to a cold faster than wet underwear that sticks to your skin while you stand motionless at the lift or freeze in the cold chairlift.
Is natural merino wool or versatile synthetic fiber the ideal choice? This question is not so easy to answer. As is so often the case, the only thing to say here is: it depends!
Merino wool has the great advantage that it keeps you warm even when damp. It can absorb up to 30 percent of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet. Merino underwear is therefore ideal for stop-and-go sports. When you climb a mountain on skis, you stop every now and then to catch your breath and enjoy the view. Merino underwear is recommended as a base layer in this case. It is also odorless and smells fresh again the next day if you can hang it up overnight.
Synthetic fibers can be specifically manufactured for a wide range of requirements using appropriate spinning processes. Hollow fibers, bulky yarns, smooth or rough structures—everything is possible. In addition, the combination of polyester, polyamide, and elastic yarns ensures a huge range of functions right from the yarn stage. Special machines use these yarns to produce seamless, highly elastic, and quick-drying functional underwear. So why look for an alternative? Synthetic fibers quickly develop an unpleasant odor and should be washed after every sweaty workout. If that's not possible, then merino wool is your first choice.
How fortunate that the advantages of both fibers can be combined. At Transa, you'll find lots of styles made from a clever mix of different natural and synthetic fibers. This allows you to enjoy the natural warmth of nature while benefiting from the functionality of synthetic fibers. Functional underwear for women doesn't get any better than this.
