The best way to do this is to rinse it with a swimming pool until the bright, original color reappears. Each filter element loses a little material with each cleaning. The mass gauge indicates whether a filter element is used up and needs to be replaced. It's very simple: if the gauge passes over a filter element, the filter must be replaced.
